Born near the coast, I grew up appreciating the ever changing expanse of sea and sky.

Stepping into an English woodland enables one to enter a magical world that delights the senses and lifts the spirit. I visit woodlands throughout the year, each season having its very own characteristics. From the sights and smell of a bluebell wood in springtime to the honey dripped glory that is autumn.
I therefore consider myself fortunate that I have one of England’s most famous Beech woodlands on my doorstep. Burnham Beeches covers 540 acres and is situated in South Buckinghamshire just to the north west of London. Sandwiched between the conurbations of Slough and Beaconsfield it is the remnant of an ancient woodland that once covered a large area of the county.
During the latter part of the 19th Century the City of London Corporation purchased Burnham Beeches to safeguard the area from property developers and to protect its future for generations to come. The landscape of this Site of Special Scientific Interest was created by human management going back many centuries. It has provided grazing land for livestock and fuel via the pollarding of Beech and Oak trees. It is this pollarding that has helped to prolong the lives of these trees and help give them their characteristic stunted and gnarled appearance.
The following portfolio is my response to this world of wonder and features images made in the icy grip of winter, the vibrancy of springtime, the green canopy of summer, through to the richness of autumn.
STOKE COMMON
Stoke Common is the sister site of Burnham Beeches and is the largest remnant of ancient heathland that once covered South Bucks.

Dorney Lake is probably more well known for being the Olympic Rowing venue in 2012. It also boasts over 400 acres of stunning parkland and Arboretum containing a superb collection of specimen shrubs and trees. Planted in regular rows and patterns they offer the photographer a wealth of creative opportunities.

How does one go about trying to explain the appeal of pinhole photography? With no viewfinder and the unpredictability of using film, it’s a technique that relies more on instinct and creative vision than technology.
My preferred method of capture is through the use of a Zero 2000 pinhole camera and either Ilford Delta 100 or Kodak Ektar film.

Vie et Mort (life and death). This project started a few years ago, as a way to decompress after a mentally exhausting day following a Royal Photographic Society distinctions assessment. The RPS headquarters are situated just outside of central Bristol in an area called The Paintworks. On the opposite side of the busy A4 is an oasis of calm and peacefulness called Arnos Manor cemetery.
The cemetery was designed by Charles Underwood in the style of a Greek Necropolis. Within a few years of its opening in 1837 it became the most fashionable place to be buried in Bristol. During the 20th century the cemetery fell into disrepair, and local groups began campaigning for its restoration. In 1987 the owner disclosed plans to exhume the bodies and develop the site for housing. Early in the 21st century, following a public campaign, the site was subject to a compulsory purchase order by Bristol City Council. The decision was then made by the council to maintain the paths and buildings but to let nature create a wildlife haven in the older parts.
My preferred method of image capture is to use an infrared converted digital camera. By its very nature infrared photography is a relatively low in contrast which can then be increased during post processing. I tend not to over process my images as I want to retain the soft ethereal feel that suits the subject matter. Some of these images have been made with a Fuji XE-1 (830nm) and more recently a Fuji XT-2 (720nm).
Other images in this series have been made at the West Brompton Cemetery in West London. I am hoping to explore more when the opportunity arises.
